OSIER, ETHICAL LUXURY BAGS
by Leticia Bordoni on June 15, 2019
Often times we wish and strive for luxury - but it comes with a hefty price. No, we’re not talking about cash, we are talking about the impact it leaves on our environment. Fortunately, there are brands popping up everywhere that offer a conscious solution to this problem, and our friend OSIER is one of them. OSIER truly has the best of both worlds. Their timeless faux leather bags look like a million bucks whilst holding onto their sustainable values. To learn more about how they make an ethical luxury design work, we asked what sustainability and fashion mean to them.
“Trends are the product of our capitalistic system. They animate consumers to buy new pieces every season that will quickly go out of style again to make room for new trends to emerge. The ever-growing appetite for new goods is a big strain on our natural resources and a driver for climate change. This is why we have created a capsule collection of timeless essentials. These staple pieces will never run out of style and once you're done wearing them, you can pass them on to your best friend, mom or sister.”
OSIER aims to revolutionize the fashion industry by putting their main focus on three aspects: sustainability, transparency, and quality. They believe that fashion is not just about the form and function of a product, it has to carry a positive message that contributes to the feeling of wearing beautiful accessories.
“Growing landfills, animal welfare, and human rights issues within the industry, the use of harsh chemicals and much more are major challenges that we can only overcome and resolve if brands, consumers and governments work together.”
Fast fashion has been the enemy of the industry change-makers forever. Tackling the trends that seem to just come and go, leaving behind tonnes of wasted fabrics and materials, is hard to witness.
“Our ever-growing appetite for cheap consumer goods creates this problem. To combat the growing demand, there will need to be a global approach of brands, consumers, advertising agencies, influencers, ... to promote the value of quality over quantity. We need to focus on reusing, repairing and restyling our loved items.”
Recycling your closet is a must when taking on a sustainable lifestyle. Whether you reuse your our clothing yourself, give it to a friend, donate, or simply put it away for the next generations to wear - items that have been made well can be used for many lifetimes.
“Sustainability is sexy! Many big brands have realized that this a huge 'trend' within the industry right now and want to benefit from it. One of the problems is that words such as 'green' or 'sustainable' aren't regulated so virtually anyone can use them without proof. This makes it very hard for consumers to tell the difference between an actual sustainable product and a green-washed item. It's important to carefully read labels, check materials, look for certifications and research the brands you're buying from.”
So where can you find the bags? OSIER is based in Amsterdam but will be touring around, taking part in different pop-ups including the PAUSE London Fashion Week edition this September. They are working hard on finalizing their second collection - check out their all vegan bags named by the different neighbourhoods of Amsterdam to find your next everyday staple piece.
